The devil wears prada

I.                   Narrative elements:

1.      Title:

a.       “The devil wears Prada”, in the color of that title we can see that it used two colors, red and yellow. The meaning of red is brave, hard, power and it symbol of “fire”. Then the yellow meaning is loyality, social energy, logic, teamwork, happy, cheerful, and warm. And Backgroud: brown is symbol of earth, land.

The backgroung on the text use a big crowd town with high building and  clean river or situation that show formal and high class live in the town, like New York the fashion town. This background support the tittle appearance, the meaning of  “The devil wears Prada” apply in the background that the devil is  in the town. Beside that “prada” is corelated with the background town where parada is also in the New York.

In another side the color of the background is brown meanwhile the colors of the title is red and yellow that contrast with the background so that the title can see clearly.

The tittle appears after the background, first the background appers with activity in the bridge in the front of the high buildings that show it is busy place. The tittle appears from the back side, appears from the bacground by a little wavy light that means glamour and off from screen after it.

But before the background and title appears tehere were an introducing main characters that play by a woman in mirror and present the two names of the character, they were Meryl Streep and Anne Hathway, Meryl in red color while Anne in yellow color. The both of names of Meryl and Anne same with the Title color, red and yellow. Meryl in red color can be the presentation of “the devil” in tittle.

b.      The color of the title and background show the contrast one, the dominant of the screen is “the devil” and “prada” because the red color alwas be attention of others. And the yellow that support that. The tittle colors support that “devil” identic with cruel symbolize by red color and “prada” is a famous brand in fashion that also show by red color to describe the high classes in fashion.

So “the devil wears prada” it sybolism of the high style in life, it can be a person that fashionable on their appearance used “prada” symbol of the highest famous brand in  fashion. Its doesn’t means the devil that wears prada in real life. But perhaps person that act like devil.

2.      Opening theme:

It such a crowd town, hurry, sex, sexy, style

·         A crowd activity in bridge by the car and high buildings in the place.

·         Hurry because the women on the mirror like hurry to brush her tooth.

·         Sex, showing woman body and their attitude with the boy in her room.

·         Sexy, woman body on good underwears and dress.

·         Style, fashionable and simple, the way the character choose the cloths that has a fashion value and when they make up their self. Some of them choose a high class style and cosmetic but one of them choose a simple one.

·         Glamourus life and simple, such person who life in glamour place, clean, and tidy but the one is untidy with their appearance.

3.      Plot:

a.       Yes, I do.

As we  know that plot is the sequence of incidents or events of which a story is composed. Plot arranges the sequence of events is being told in film; those are forward, back and backforward. It divide into lenear and non-linear. And This film contains linear or chronological structure.

Such introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

b.      Elements of plot:

·         Introduction: in this story start with the character and characterization of the players. The main character are Miranda and Andrea, then Emily, Nigel, Nite, etc are supporting character. And also the setting of place.

At beginning of the story, Andrea is a simple and smart woman want to have a job and try to apply in Runway, famous fashion magazine in New York. The contrast condition.

·         Rising action: the problem happen when Andre or Andy, a simple woman meets with emily, nigel, and Miranda the boss of Runway, a number one fashion magazine that make Runway a Guide for Fashion Lover through their Worker in that factory. She is unpermit woman that act like devil. Instruct what she want without any mistake.

Emily look at Andy as something dirty and humour. It show by emily that said “she is not” to the Miranda when she ask about Andrea.

      Early, Miranda disbelieve to Andy because she is not modis, little fat, and she don’t know about fashion through Runway. But Andy try to make sure Miranda, she said that she is smart. Finally miranda receive her. When Andy work, she get any pressure like all his worker are modist but she is not so that she always get bad comment. In another side she can’t work well according to miranda. So that andy always get unimportant work such buy a coffe, food or something in limited time while emily always in important work like manage miranda’s scedhule.

One day miranda felt dissapointed to Andy because she can’t do well in miranda’s instruction. Andy felt so sorry and went to nigel. Nigel help him, he give andy some branded dress and shoes. Then Andy look so modist. All people, andy’s boy friend and her friends,  through miranda proud on andy’s style from, dresses, hair style, make up,etc. Then she work well than before.

·         Climax : the top of conflict/ the problem straighting. When all andy’s job (buy a coffe, put the jacket and bag, etc) handled by emily. And emily’s job handled by Andy because Andy can do well what miranda instruct although Andy should sacrifice his personal life with his friends and boy friend. Miranda invites Andy to go to Paris but Andy refused it. Because Emily was wait for it in long time, untill she do a hard diet to wears a beautifull dress in paris. Before andy told him to emily then emily get an accident and emily should use gips. It make her dissapointed. Andy goes to paris with miranda although the work cast her time just to serve miranda instruction. That finally she lost her time with his Nate (her boyfriend), her friends, and her father.

·         Falling action: When Miranda said that “choises is need in life” “you look like me, and all people want to be us” and then andy aware that she doesn’t want such miranda’s life. Then Andy go way from Miranda. She rejected Miranda calling and throw her mobile phone to pool. She choose to out from the job.

·         Resolution: Andy back to her life with her boyfriends and firends. She decide to her ambission, a journalist. She gives all her high dresses to emily. And she enjoy her life.

4.      Character :

The character of this film are:

the main character are             : miranda and Andy

Supporting caharacter are       : nate, nigel, emily, the worker, james holt, cristian thompson, Twins, jackquillence follet, etc

Protagonist                  : Andy (build the theme)

Antagonist                  : Miranda (give the conflict of the theme)

Statis/ flat                    : Nite and friends, her father, Nigel (still on commitment)

Round/ dynamic         : Emily and her patner (changes her point of view to andy)

5.      Characterization:

Character become real-like because of the characterization.

Character: Andy, Miranda, Nite, andy’s friends, emily and the worker, nigel, Twins, andy’s father, etc.

The characterization look by:

a.       Appearances, costumes, face

The appearances support the character characterization,

·         Like Andrea or Andy:

look so simple on her apperance.

Early, From the costume, she uses a blue sweater, a black long short, a old skirt, and flat shoes. She always bring a note book and bolpoin show that she loves to write and smart.

In another side, her face is nature, a litle make up, just chapstick. With untidy hair. All about

Show that she isn’t modist and don’t know well with fashion.

From her face, she has rounded eyes, sharp nose, and sexy lips. Show that she is cheerful, always smile by his mouth. And she is logic person show by her way to look something by her eyes. In another side she is easy going woman that doesn’t care to others comment like when Miranda ask “whats wrong with the costume” “any thing fun?” and Andy just smile and show the innoncent face by up one of her eyebrows. She has beautiful face and it identic with kindness.

Then, finally she become a modist woman that show by her appearance, the way she choose the costume, and make up her face. If she use a sweater before so she change by use branded dresses and accesoris. She also use cosmetic to make up her face. And make her hair tidy than before.

Her face looks like more brightly and focuses, there is no an easy going andy. She try to proffesionals on her job and things about many thing about her job.

When she works, she can be proffesional in short time, change her way of dressed and work quickly. Means that she really wants change and study fast about something, she is smart.

·         Miranda,

Her appearance always modist, tidy and keep her perfomance. she like to wears high class branded as the boss of Runway. She dislike something unmodist and untidy, she always give comment about that, it means she is a perfectionist women. Then, miranda like to used black glasses, means she doesn’t care to others.

She like to speak slow but it can hurt someone else, from the way of speak and smile show that she wants has a good name as Runway boss in public figure. Sometimes she speak so slow but fast, and the assistants should write she said quickly because she will not replay it again. It seems she is talkactive and emergency boss.

In another side, the way she decide the costume choises to designer she prefer uses her body language like her nude, 1 nude is good, 2 nude is very good, smiling, or press her lips that means “Go/ No”. From her body face language means that she is arrogant, not respect to others work more over she never say “thanks” on what others do.

Actually miranda is weak, it show by her family conflict and the competition in fashion. The weakness show when she cries but she tries to be strong and smiling. She also close to others about his family conflict so that she will be angry if someone enter her room without appoinment before.

·         Nite and friends.

Such as Andy before. They look so simple. Wears a common and unclasses cloth with discaring to their hair.

They make a good friends and boy friends with Andy, they always have fun together and support to andy’s job.

·         Nigel

has a good performance and has many branded dresses and shoes. Means that he know well about fashion. Her face look like a warm man, and he always help Miranda and Andy.

When he happy, his face will so cherfull and he touch his head. But if he dissapointed to something he just hit his thumbs and touch his cheeks.

·         Emily:

as we know that in this story emily dislike Andy. It show from first they meet. Emily dislike to Andy’s appearance and than she jealous when Andy go to Paris with Miranda.

Firstly, emily thinks that her dress is better than Andy. It show by the way she dressed. It describe she know the fashion from branded dressed. And she can do well the job quickly, like she acts fast to do Miranda Instruction.

Emily never smile, she look like Miranda that always emergency women. Like there is no fun for her may be because she loves her job. She has tiny body to support her appearance means that she also wants a perfect perfomance.

b.      Dialogue

The characterization show by the dialogue between character:

·         To describe Andy:

When Emily meet Andy, she say:

“HRD didn’t has a high humouris”

means that she thinks that Andy’s is too slow and emily doesn’t has time to make a long Conversation with Andy. (#first part)

Andy is unmodist woman, It support with their dialogue:

“Andrea, Runway is a fashion Magazine so the fashion interest is need”

Then andrea said “why do you think that i’m not interest with fashion?”

And emily just look and silent.

In other dialogue in hospital:

emily “you should know all the dress and shoes that you get, you are not available to used tht.!!” (#second part)

From that dialogue means that Andy is unsuitable with that job. (#first part)

Andy is unfashionable but she is smart

Miranda “so you never heard about Runway?”

Andy “No”

Miranda “and you don’t have style or fashion taste“

Andy “its depend on......”

Andy “I don’t know fashion but I’m Smart. I can learn quickly and hard working” (#first part)

Miranda “is there something fun?”

Andy “No, but the belt is look like same” she direct to write again.

Miranda “you just take a bad sweater in your board”

In andy home:

Andy and nite “they just cast of their time to think unimportant things” (#first part)

Means that Andy never thinks about fashion, and she doesn’t care about that, she just think about work.

Andy never give up to situation,

Show when she has mistake and miranda dissapointed with her, then she go to Nigel to told about that. Finally she knows her fault and ask nigel to help her.

Nigel “so stop”

Andy “no. It isn’t fear”

“Nigel “I don’t know what you hope from me” (#first part)

And they go to beauty department to change andy style. And she repair her work well.

“ well, it will happen when you were success on your work” (#second part )

Andy can decide and think well what will she does,

First, because miranda  pressure she choose to follow her go to paris and let emily that wait in long time for that. (#second part)

Miranda “choises is need in life” “you look like me, and all people want to be us”

Andy “but I dont’t want life like you”

Then she left miranda. (#second part)

Andy is Great women:

Nate “I think you always look wonderfull”

Andy “bullshit,,”

Christian “.. you are so smart, interesting...”

Andy “owh.. I have to go”

·         To describe miranda,

Miranda is perfectionist woman:

When, first time miranda comes to the office than she comment about all thing she see to Emily. Like:

Miranda “I don’t understand what the difficulty of fullfil the promise”

Miranda “said to simonne I disagree with the girl that he send for Brazil photograph. I want a beautiful, clean, atletic, warm. He send me a dirty and tiny model.” And miranda say everything and instruct quickly.

Miranda wants all things perfect so she choose all thing by her self.

Miranda “where the other dress?”

The staff “here” “I think that it will interesting by add...”

Miranda “No. Its disappointed” (#first part)

Miranda is fashionable woman:

Miranda to Andy “ you go to your board and choose the bad blue sweater, you said that you don’t care about what you wears” “but you don’t know that the sweater is blue or what, it is serulian” “you don’t know about that. Last year Oscar de la ronte make a serulian collection, then it in sale in the shop.” “it is fun if you said there is no correlation with fashion meanwhile you wears a cloth” (#first part)

It means that Miranda know well about fashion and all product of fashion.

Miranda so care about her family specially her twins:

Miranda to Andy

“I need harry potter book for my twins” (#first part)

actually she is weak caused the family conflict:

“i don’t care what people said about me, but it for my children. It is not fear for them” (#second part)

She is struggle woman:

Show when her life cast of just for Runway, and she always talk and do for Runway in the next time.

“...runway will be sad with all the list...” “ they will follow me where ever I left Runway...” (#second psrt)

Miranda is act Like Devil: she is forcer

Emily to Andi “you should always answer the phone”

            “may you know that it is a hard work”

Miranda to Andy “I need a plane,from Miami to New york”

Andy “I was Try, but there is no plane in bad weather”

Miranda “ thats your obligation! thats your duty! take me home!”

Miranda “call james holt office and said, I will start preview earlier”

Nigel ”but our scedhule on Tuesday, does she says the reason?”

Andy “yes, its her decition” (#second part)

Means that she always make her own decition, and force what she wants.

Miranda never pity to her assistan:

Miranda “I need a good team to paris, but emily”

Andy “wait,, you want me, no... I can’t, emily will dead, it will hurt”

Miranda “if you won’t it means you are not sure on your future”

Miranda “Andrea don’t be forget to said it to emily. Do it Now” (#second part)

Miranda is decipline:

When her coffe come late she ask “where my coffe. Is she died or something?”

“have you call patrick?”

“tell to other we will have preview a half hour” (#first part)

She is cosiderable woman:

When she consider to take emily “I consider to take a risk. make something different than before. And I have hope”

            She also make long consideration when she choose jacquilne fallet as the new president on james holt from Run way.

She said “no body can do what I do and thats great solution.”

c.       Others character’s respomses

·         About Miranda

The woman in the lift keep space to miranda, she choose not in the same lift with miranda and she said “sorry” its mean that Miranda should be respected.

In another side all her assistant also keep space with her may be because they don’t want to meet and get bad comment by miranda. Beside that when there is mistake on that office so miranda will comment so that when Miranda come to the office emily will serve all miranda wants without late. So that emily say “oh God. No” “Miranda will arrive, tell to others!”

Tell to others in order every people can prepair their self to meet with her.

Miranda always comment about something and Emily should write all about scedhule that Miranda said. If The assistant don’t do what she suggest so she will dissapointed and angry. So that Emily said to Andy “it is hard work” “never ask to Miranda”. And emily always note what miranda said.

Miranda know well about fashion it see by emily word and act when Miranda come and Emily and others worker wears highheel and make up. “and my face still untidy”

                                    Nigel “I can’t believe that”

            In another side, when there were a photograph so amanda should choose by her own self where the bestone. Perhaps it cause Miranda talents on fashion through she is a noss. Emily “Miranda always choose all by her self”

Miranda is the boss of run way and she is legend it show by emily and andy dialogue: “

Andy “whose Miranda?

Emily “oh God, I pretend you don’t ask about that”

“She is a directur of Runway and A Legend. All women want this job”

Andy “it sound great” (#first part)

it means that she is an important and Fashionable woman.

Miranda wants to meet Andy to interviewing her, Andy bring her bag then emily said “it is wrong. Don’t let her see that. Go!” emily throw andy’s bag. Amanda will comment if she look bad appearance.

Miranda is a great women:

Andy’s friend “Really, Miranda is famous. She is great women, many women willing to dies for that job”

Andy “but i’m not one of them” (#part 1)

Franklin and Rebecca “Miranda you are so great” (second part)

When miranda and emily go to paris and appreciate by all people like designr, reporter there.

The reporter in paris said “miranda and Nigel. Like a goal keeper”

Miranda act like instructor:

Theinstruction should do quickly.

Emily wants Andy write all think from miranda instruction “note it, take a pan. I wants 3 coffe with rum and hot milk.”

And when Miranda ask about that, Emily act fast.

Emily “where are you?”

Emily “Oh God. No” “you should know it is a hard work. And if you have mistake,  I will Off”

Miranda instructor also show in emily said:

Emily “we have different job. You buy coffe and others instruction and I manage her scedhule” (first part)

            Miranda often to Angry if there is a mistake. Like the assistant should answer the phone. And emily said “the calling should answer. And if it ansewered by voice massages Miranda willbe angry”(first part)

            Miranda so close: Emily “Miranda so close. she dislike a stranger on her home. Till she pretend you are not phsyco”

Miranda is arrogant woman. it show when Andy tell all her sadness to nigel:

Andy “she dislike me nigel.she never say thanks if I do something but she will angry if i have little mistake. She is cruel.”

Andy “so just by press her lips and she changes all the collection?”

Nigel “you still don’t understand, just her opinion that important”

Miranda focus on her work, for Runway

Nigel “Miranda just do her job” “Runway is not just magazine but it is an Icon,,,”

Andy to Christian “Miranda will be hurt. All her life is about runway” (second part)

Miranda is cruel:

Andy to nigel “...She is cruel...”

Nate when take Andy cell phone  “from a Dragon woman”

And she ever drop out 2 assistant before it. It told by emily. Its mean she act like devil. Act by her self.

It also show by christian responses,

Andy “I work as Miranda assistant”

Christian “unfortunately,, may you survive till the end,,,”

It means it difficult to work with miranda.

When emily and andy in hospital,

Andy “I don’t have choice. You know her.”

Emily “it is bad reason.”

Miranda has his own way to valued because her opinion and desition is important:

Nigel know that “1 nude, 2 nude, and press her lips”

·         About Andy:

She is unmodist and unfashionable woman:

When Miranda will interviewing Andy. Andy bring an old bag and emily said “it is wrong. Don’t let miranda see that. Go!.”

It means that Andy bag is not fashionable so that emily forbid her.

Nate “wait.. you get the job from fashion magazine?, that the interview from mobile phone?”

The question show that it is possible for unfashionable Andy to get job in fashion magazine. That so contrast.

It also show when nigel give her shoes:

Nigel “i think your size is 8,5”

In this time nigel thanks that she need it to manage their appearance.

When Miranda called her and look to her shoes and said “just it” so Andy directly change her shoes.

When emily and her friend talking about andy:

Emily “this is new assistant”

Emily friend “I mean you are kidding” “actually what she wears?”

Emily “her grandma skirt”

It means andy has an old appearance.

Same happens when emily and her patner talk about Andy and emily said “I know from the first time I see her, she can be a fashion destroyer” perhaps because of her dress and limitate fashion that Andy know.

Andy is easy going women and never car about fashion through her body:

When she take lunch and meet with nigel. She choose a fat food. It means that she never keep her body.

Nigel “clam chowder soup, good choice. You know that fat is Clam Chowder soup contains” and Nigel always said about 4, 6 size. It actually about Andy body that litle fat.

Nigel “it just for 2 or 4 size. Wears this. May be can. May be.”

Andy is smart and great women:

Said by Miranda to Andy “I think you are different. Take the clever and fat girl”

Nate said “I think you always look great”

            Because fo she aware of her condition so she decide to change her appearance and her way to work, when the first time she change her appearance, Emily, emily’s patner and Miranda felt so suprise;

Emily patner “you lokk so great. Thats right”

Emily “shut up!”

Miranda also admit that Andy has a good work it show when she choose Andy in her good team to go to paris than emily. Beside that miranda call her name “ANDREA” not emily again. Miranda also believe on Andy, the book that so private is delivered by Andi on her house.

In another side christian thompson also said that she look like an smart and interesting girl.

When they go to paris, miranda said “I found a samething on andy such as her self.” It means that Miranda like to Andy’s job and thinking. Because andy can make decition, and choose the condition.

Finally, when Andy out from Runway and she try to apply to be journalist. The boss said that he get email from Miranda and miranda said “Andy is most dissapointed assistant but if he doesn’t receive Andy it means he is idiot” from Miranda’s email means that she like Andy and support Andy’s decition to work as journalist. Then When Miranda meet Andy she just smile from in side of her car.

When Andy call emily and give her all the paris dress, then emily said to he new assistan that exchange Andy. Emily says “you must change a very great people. May you know that.!” The great andy moreover can change emily mind that hate her before.

Andy care to other:

When she have something like accesories she gave him to her friends. And her friends said “I like your job”

When emily have a bad cold so Andy give hem tissue and emely said “how kind you are”

When miranda cries because her family conflict: andy offers her to refuse the schedulr but she doesn’t want. She just tell about her problem may be she felt enjoy with andy.

Andy sacrifice her time and friends for her job. It look like when nate and her friends dissapointed to her because she doesn’t come to nate births day. In another side they were break because Andy too focuses on their job.

6.      Conflict

a.       There are three kind of conflict. They are:

Man vs Nature

Man vs Man

Man vs her/himself

In this film there are two conflict:

·         Man Vs her/him self

When Andy look at the mirror and she aware of her self before she become Miranda assistant. Andy jus with an old clothes.

            When Miranda instruct her to said to emily that she will go with Miranda to Paris. Actually Andy doesn’t want that. He felt pity to emily. She thinks it over the day.

           

Actuall Andy want to be her self by her appearance but she thinks and aware on nigel word and change her self.

Miranda thinks about her self and her Twins without any body know the problem except Andy. She always cries alone.

·         Man vs Man

When Miranda, Emily, Nigel and others comment about Emily appearance. Emily felt pressure because of that. And change her appearance.

When there are mistake, Miranda will angry to Andy.

When Andy and Nate debating about andy that was change. And her friends also say at that some thing. She cast out her time just for work.

When Andy told emily in hospital about miranda decition and emily is angry because of that. Emily think that it is not fear. Andy felt that she get difficulty. She try to explain to emily.

When Andy doesn’t want to be Miranda and she decide to leave Miranda and apply for journalist.

7.      Setting

The setting of this film support the story.

·         Like setting of places:

Exterrior: in New York, fahinable town that palce of all people make a fashion and center of style in the world.

In Paris, as we know that Paris also the center of fashion. So that the big fashion parade always taken in paris. It place of drsigner and become a guide of fashion in the world so that it support the story. Such Runway, the famous fashion magazine in New York.

The crowded town show the high level of life there.

The Runway office also show the business of fashion work there. The place full of branded dreses and fashionable worker.

The Miranda’s house show the character of Miranda that rich. While the andy place also show that she is simple and just can pay for the rent home. It different with Miranda.

The Bar, show that it just for common pepople with low classes like Andy and her friends.

Then the place party like designer place is different. Where the visitors are high classes.

Interior: like in bed room of Andy show the intimacy with her boyfriend.

Miranda living room, that she used for read something show high classes Miranda on her room.

In Paris, the hotel show the high classes from Miranda.

·         Setting of Time:

Like in the Morning when Andys brush her teeth means spirits.

Morning and noon describe a crowded activity, these time to work.

Night, if it means a relax time but not for Miranda and Andy. Andy should do what Miranda’s instruction through the night.

·         Setting of situation:

The season is Winter, so that all people in this story use jacket or sweater on their body.

It took in Winter, it add interesting story because Miranda always put his jacket and bag to Andy table. It add the role of that accesories in the story. Lets imagine if it is in Summer so may be just the bag that she put on. And it is so simple, no others accesoris.

The situation at that time, so straight because all people will feel, panic, hurry, on their job because Miranda’s instruction. So they will do it as quickly they can without any mistake.

II.                Miss-en-scene Analysis:

·         the dominant in the shot is the character of Andrea. That created by:

zise: she is the largest objeck in the shot

focus: the focus only her in the shot

lighting: Andrea get more ligthing. Her picture is clear

colour: her color is White, while the background is full of colour such grey, gree, etc.

·         Lighting

It used moderate lighting where no bright light and shadow. A litle bright but not dark.

·         Shot and camera proxemics

The shot is close-up. Show in small object and very little if any locale. Soclose, just her part of body and head.

·         Camera Angel

Eye level shot the object is clear but add little Dramatic condition.
